so.. um. 2002 Mazda 626 with 87k on it.. drive it about 40 min on the highway, park it, 2 min later try to start it up and lights come on, engine cranks a little, but it won't start. Get it jumped, bam it works. park it in garage.. next day drive it out and back home another 40 min on highway. Next day I try to start it, same deal.. lights work, engine attempts to crank (dome light dims when I attempt to start).. jump start it and take it to the mechanic. Mechanic wants to charge me $90 to install new battery (which I figured I needed) and $460 to put in a new starter saying it drew too much from the battery or something. Am I getting fucked on the last part or not? :/

Does the engine crank real slow till it just clicks? If so, put a good battery in it and problem solved.
Use an Interstate or Optima. Don't skimp on a battery it will come back to haunt you.
Edit: I can't think of a single starter I have replaced on a car made >2000 that had a starter draw issue. I suppose anything's possible but I would tell the mechanic to go fuck himself, bring a friend with jumper cables and take your ass to the Interstate/Optima store. Once again I cannot stress how important it is to get a good battery, and I don't mean some top of the line O'Reilly or Autozone badass either.
