Actually, I never thought the problem was the BoP nature of the orbs. It really came down to the way you got orbs vs the way you got patterns. Patterns dropped in a raid instance that, by its very existance, made it so that you didn't want to go to the place that dropped orbs.

The real solution would have been to make orbs purchaseable via badges (but still BoP) in 4.2 and then made them BoE in 4.3.

This solution definitely works. But it doesn't save the fact that orbs in 4.2 were completely retarded.
