So, SSD isn't a replacement for a normal hard drive? I didn't know that. How does that work then? Do you just have like a C: drive where you store data and a D: drive that's an SSD where you run the OS and programs?
Re: Building a PC - Riinuka - 11-05-2012
Backwards. You get an SSD for OS which would be on C:\, or some people just get it to install programs to run them or whatever. You want storage to be a regular HDD, unless it's something you need to access quickly.
My setup is this, though it's kinda silly -
120 GB SSD - OS, programs
500 GB - storage
1 TB - storage, OS backup

Firecrest Wrote:I really want to keep the build in the $1000 range and SSD would blow like half my budget. In order to do the SSD, I'd have to scale back on the video card to like a 640 2GB. It seems like if I had to pick SSD/640 or HD/670, that the better video card would win, right? Don't consider anything less than a 660.

Cool. That makes sense. Getting like a 128GB SSD and a 500GB HDD is not too expensive. I should be able to do that and still get at least a 660 video card like Jack said (awesome chart btw - very helpful).

In my experience interference with sound hardware is caused by all the wires running to the front panel especially poorly grounded USB connections. If you didn't notice there is a 660 and a 660 ti and the 660 ti is the faster and more expensive model. 670 > 660 ti > 660.

You won't blow half your budget on a SSD. The newest generation is right around the corner, and there have been pretty solid reductions on the current top tier. You get a solid 128G for about 70-80 after rebates if you're patient and I wouldn't be surprised to see them go lower than that on Black Friday/Cyber Monday.
That said, you don't need to have one. When you think about saving time booting, people grossly overstate the difference it makes. The real question is whether or not you feel like its important to load your games faster. I'm doing it for the computer I'm building soon, but in the grand scheme of things I'm really only doing it because everything else I'm doing is fairly high end for gaming.

I've been using the same dedicated sound card now for about 6 years, its typically the only component that i carry over.
Who the fuck uses those connectors anyway.

when i turn up view distance or texture quality or whatever in wow, my hd just starts thrashing 30s at a time whenever i fly into a populated area, zone into a new zone, stare at anything but the ground, etc. an ssd might help with stuff like that

I dont see how anyone can have less than 1TB of storage.
