the charts skewed because we changed the classification of mentally ill which people make claim a LOT more because of the benefits thereof.
Same thing with how when I was growing up, kids were just classified as having high energy, now they are known as a treatable versions of ADHD. When more people get classified as BLANK, then more funding and other perks are thrown out.
This is a perfect example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr1kwC0je1Y
Basically this guys trying to get federal money because he got hurt playing football while he was in prep school saying he served his county and should get support, the lady in response is missing both fucking legs. Gotta love loopholes.

That chart should be changed to reflect the mentally ill people in LFR....the numbers are the same. Only difference is, the people in lfr should be thrown screaming from a helicopter.

Classification of mental illnesses isn't as much of the cause as the unions of correctional officers and the pharmaceutical industry. We decided to reduce mental illness facilities with the advent of pharmaceuticals, so instead we give individuals with mental illnesses SSI disability to take care of themselves with medication. Since sending out checks is cheaper than running facilities with medical staff the government has reduced criteria to qualify for SSI disability. All in all we spend about the same on mental illness as a % of GDP, just in a different way, which in-turn hurts the severely mentally ill because they can't take care of themselves no matter how much SSI disability they have and there aren't enough mental facilities to support them now. The increase in prison population is related to the severely mentally ill having nowhere else to turn but it's mostly because of drug laws.
