Sorry I don't elect retards! My Senators and Representative are some of the most SOPA/PIPA opposing members of all congress. Senator Wyden is the author of the alternative bill OPEN.
Representative DeFazio is the last remaining politician in Washington as well. I spammed Debbie Wasserman Schultz about it though as she is the DNC chair and sponsors the fucking bill.

Good job, America.Under current law, SOPA, PIPA, and the OPEN act Mega Upload has to remove copyrighted content after requested by the rights-holder and if they fail to do so after enough warning the feds will threaten to step in. My understanding is that Mega Upload has actively refused to remove copyrighted content and wasn't cooperating with the feds. Under SOPA/PIPA the site would've been gone years ago at the first sign of any copyright infringement and no request would've been necessary. Under the OPEN act there would've been more of a federal investigation and a confiscation of any funds acquired with the copyrighted content. Mega Upload is actually a perfect example of what these bills are combating, it is a site that is popular due to the amount of copyrighted content available yet they own none of the rights. The issue is that the proceeds from subscriptions to their service which thrives on copyrighted content should not be going to Mega Upload but they should be going to the rights-holders of the content. If you have an issue with this example then demand our copyright laws be re-looked at. There has to be some middle ground on piracy enforcement, I love my free streams and downloads of any content I want but the industry isn't going to standby and allow their shit to be stolen forever, and they aren't even that worried about those getting it for free but those who are paying somebody else for it and getting none of the proceeds. |
