how difficult would it be to set up a Murmur server and have people download and use Mumble? From what I've heard, Mumble is superior to Ventrilo and Teamspeak in every way and is free, I just assume the issue with it is getting everyone to switch over and setting up a Murmur server. Anybody have experience with Mumble/Murmur?

It's really easy to set up, and it's just as good as you've heard. In fact, the only reasons to *not* use it are 1) No serviced alternatives (have to deal with your own connection and shit) and 2) Everybody else uses ventrilo and are fucking lazy about switching, regardless of how good the alternatives are.

Half the raid complains whe. We switch sides in a hmlk strat, im sure they would cry themselves to sleep if we switched communication programs. Also they would somehow fail even more in the new server just as they fail more on strat changes

So, I don't know if you guys have come across Mumble before, but I wanted to draw your attention to it.

Mumble is a low latency VoIP that, in my opinion, trumps Vent hands down. While Mumble's auto-normalisation is nice and convenient, the real feather in Mumble's cap is the fact that there is no vent lag.

No. Vent. Lag.

My raid decided to try it out during our LK kill last night. As the raid leader, I instantly fell in love with it. Full on in love. "Plague in two seconds" -was- "Plague in two seconds". "Defile in five" -was- "Defile in five". I wasn't having to readjust and call five seconds at six and half. I didn't have to call abilities early to make sure people still had plenty of time to react after vent lag. There is literally about as much lag as a normal phone call.

Mumble does have its downsides. It does require a fair bit more configuration and set up than vent. I was also told that it is a relatively new program - and it certainly seems that way. There are still things that feel not quite as finely tuned as they could be. The client, too, is less user-friendly than vent. However, the technologically-illiterate me managed to navigate around it without too much trouble, so it is not all that bad.

As I said, we tried it out last night. Based on that, I would strongly, strongly urge the raid leadership to look into this. We've had issues with vent lag in the past and Mumble removes that. House has a server that, if you don't, we would be pleased to let you use if you want to try it out/test it for yourself. Just let me know and I will pass along the details. ^_^
