It was a shitty business model because companies had to spend years of development money before seeing any return on investment.I dont think I agree with your sentiment.
I came from an era of video games ( and you to a latter extent ), when you had to use a ton of imagination to make the games fun. Games like Ninja Gaiden, Super Mario Brothers, Bubble Bobble, Tetris, Castlevania, Zelda, Contra, TMNT, Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, Metroid, Ghost n Goblins, punchout, the list could go on and on, I didn't even mention any Genesis games.
What I took from those NES and latter SNES titles, the graphics didnt make the game, the gameplay did. Back then, games were valued on their replayability. If a game was good, you could play it a thousand times over, now days its very rare that you pick the game up after you've beat it.
Thats not to say current games are bad, I quite enjoy them, but you'll never see me beat God of War more than once, GTA*, etc etc...
The reason why I think games suck now is because they are tailored made to not be replayable so you buy the next game that comes out in a few months. Games like COD, MW, Assassins Creed, and many others have replacements that come out just months apart from each other, which typically by then you've had your fill. I look at the yearly Sports games, UFC/WWE games, and think is there really that much new content? I just feels like a big scam/marketing gimmick.
But, that's just what I see.
