It should also be noted that most of these priests are NOT using VE whatsoever. That means an extra GCD to DPS every 50 seconds or so. Now it's arguable that using VE on most fights isn't needed, I personally think that if I don't VE I don't have the right to SW. If I can't self sustain my own self-induced damage then I shouldn't be there. Not the healer's job to top me off all the time.
Even beyond this, there is yet another bug with SW that often keeps it from ticking as high as it could be. I knew this bug existed in 3.0 but I assumed it had been fixed, otherwise I would have changed my rotation. Essentially once SW is applied, casting Mind Flay renews its duration. On a fight like Patchwerk there is no excuse for SW to ever fall. However, each "renewal" of the dot uses the original application damage. Therein, if I cast it with no buffs, no crit bonuses, no shadow weaving, no trinkets, etc, it will always tick for that amount for the duration of the fight, regardless of what buffs or other modifiers I obtain during the fight. So in a nutshell, while we have talents that allow us to never cast Pain again, we should always be on the lookout for the time when all of our damage modifiers stack best, in order to ensure the highest yield possible from each tick.
