I can get the i7 860 for $120 from Intel for working at Best Buy, I was thinking about buying the 920 for my new build before I found out about this but from what I've read the 920 isn't necessarily that much better than the 860. Thoughts?
i7 860 for $120
i7 920 for $290
Is it worth the extra money? I'm leaning towards no but thought I'd see what you guys think

as i recall people buy the 920 because it overclocks better then the 860 along with it having a higher base clock rate
if you are planning on overclocking your cpu id suggest the 920 BUT $170 is enough for an extra 23in monitor or almost an additional graphics card soo its up to you

I bought a 920 and OCed it from 2.6 to 4.2 on air, but I have a beefy Asus mobo though and a monster heatsink.

after doing a bit of research
the i7 860 is on a different platform then the 920
the 860 is on the 1156 offering dual channel memory 920 is on the 1366 offering triple channel memory
they both overclock to around 4ghz off of air
the only advantage of getting the 920 over the 860 would be future proofing but seeing as the 860 and high end components will last you a while you would probably only be future proofing till technology past the "i9" is released easily 1-3+years away
so the question remains do you want to spend an extra $170 + different motherboard + triple channel ram for getting a bit more of future proofing
also looked up some bench marks.. without overclocking the 920 the 860 apparently out performs it
also WHERE THE FUCK IS MY DEAL I TOLD U BOUT INTEL RETAIL EDGE SHIT
god i fucking hate you if you leave me out of this

If you can get the 860 for $120, I highly recommend. Yes the 920 is better, but you also have to buy triple channel memory and an X58 mobo., both of which are more expensive than their i7 860 counterparts (P55 mobo and dual channel memory...though they are faster). personally, I think the 860 wins out price/perf., and you can get it up to 4 ghz or so...use a corsair h50 cooler or something, love that thing.
