So Ive got a business owner who wants to contract me to handle a social media project and customer database for several of his businesses.
Pretty light work, just setting up FB/Twitter/maintaining accounts and pre-existing database. Anyone working in the field? What should I charge this guy per hour?

I can't speak to social media management in particular, but as the Controller of a mid sized print management company, I can speak from experience regarding other professional services (this covers things like accounting, IT or legal support).
Fees from an unincorporated individual are generally in the $25-35/hr range. The same services from a local small business will run $50-85/hr. This higher amount reflects the added cost of things like a storefront and employee management/benefits.
As a side note, if possible, you will want to keep the yearly amount below $600. Doing so will allow you to avoid paying taxes to the government and having to go get a Tax ID/business license. If you cross over that $600 limit, he is obligated to send you and the IRS a 1099 come tax time and you are obligated to include it as taxable income on your return.
