Meekslol Wrote:i5 and up (or equivalent)
New Core processors (Ivy Bridge) are coming out soon, the i5-3570K is what you will want, but if you don't want to wait or there is a nice price drop then the i5-2500K is the current equivalent and really isn't much different, the new chips are mostly just more efficient and have better on-chip GPUs
Meekslol Wrote:Decent motherboard
ATX ASUS P8Z77, the LE version should have everything you need with quality enough components for an overclock of an unlocked CPU, but check out the different versions you might want some of the on-board features like Bluetooth and/or Wi-Fi
Meekslol Wrote:Functional non fancy tower
I'd recommend the Cooler Master HAF 922, but cases are mostly taste you should look at Lian-Li if you want something less fancy
Meekslol Wrote:Baseline network card
That's on-board
Meekslol Wrote:Decent power
Corsair CX600
Meekslol Wrote:Not top of the line but pretty good graphics card
New generation of GPUs just came out and are overpriced, it appears the HD 6950 and GTX 560 Ti are still the best value
Meekslol Wrote:Don't care about Hard drive a baseline one will do
7200 RPM and SATA 3.0 or 6.0 GB/s, the Hitachi Deskstar or Seagate Barracuda or WD Caviar are all good drives I've used, Abe recommended
Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive $119.99 and you can't really beat that
Meekslol Wrote:I have 6 gb of memory lying around (although it seems memory has a lot more factors than capacity these days)
You should use DDR3 and I'd recommend at least PC3 12800 (DDR3 1600) speed, RAM is really cheap you can get
two 4GB sticks of G.SKILL Ripjaws X PC3 17000 (DDR3 2133) for like $50
Meekslol Wrote:Just a cd DVD player and writer
LITE-ON OEM DVD Burner is $17
Meekslol Wrote:Do I need a sound card?
The on-board ones are perfectly fine unless you're using a really high quality home theater sound system and/or studio sound equipment
Meekslol Wrote:Anything else I may have forgotten.
Most PC builds include a SSD if budget permits, it's not necessary but it's definitely worth the cost and you can always get one later, the Crucial m4 and Intel 330 and Samsung 830 are all about $100 for a 64 GB drive and $160 for a 128 GB drive
Also if you really want to overclock your CPU or just have a cooler and more efficient running PC you should get an CPU cooler, the
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo is great and only $35
Meekslol Wrote:New egg still the place to build this?
Yes
Going off of Newegg's prices as of this reply:
CPU i5-2500K: $220
Mobo P8Z77-V LE: $165
Case HAF 922: $90
PSU CX600: $50
GPU AMD HD 6950: $230
HD Barracuda 2 TB: $120
G.SKILL 2x4 GB RAM: $51
OEM Disc drive: $17
TOTAL: $943
That should be a start Meeks and I'm sure you'll hear lots of advice from different people, just do some research but $900 or so should build a plenty powerful enough PC.
