Quasi Computer Question

I own this TV. I want that TV to wirelessly act as a monitor for my computer. Is it possible? How do I do it?

Basically, I want to be able to sit down on the sofa in my living room, pick up my remote, flip over to AUX 2 or whatever and then use a wireless keyboard/mouse to run the PC that sits in my office. I'm thinking hardware would be required, as I would need some set top-box or something to act as a reciever for a mouse and keyboard since mine obviously won't reach from my living room to my office.

Does they make something like this?

After poking around some more, I found this page with a wirless PC to TV video converter. The crappy part is that it's only 480p. And on top of that, I also want to be able to use a wireless keyboard and mouse to control my office PC from my living room. Do they even make really long range wireless mouse/keyboards that can go through a couple walls?

There's about 35 feet and two walls between my office and my living room. The longest range I've found so far is 33 feet. That's close, but I assume that the walls would probably cut the effective range to less than I require.

most wireless devices run off of bluetooth, it does not penetrate most inhome walls.

You could probably fish all the wires through your walls and just get a wireless keyboard and mouse with a little base that connects via usb to the computer and then a usb extension cable.

I feel that wireless video is a waste of most consumers time at this point, just get a long hdmi cable or something.

imho; set yourself up a cheap media centre pc for your living room... just network it to your office PC if you want access to the files it contains.

You can get something dirt cheap ($200-$300) that would do what you want.

With a solution like this you can stream your videos or porn or what the hell ever. If you actually want to use the programs on your office PC, just set up a free remote access program like LogMeIn or TeamViewer.

Of course, if you *just* want to stream video or music off of your office PC and you happen to own an Xbox or PS3, you already have the hardware you need to accomplish this.

I bought a 30' HDMI to DVI cable from my computer to my TV for streaming videos via plex, it would work for games too as I used it as a NES emulator.

I don’t really want just network accessibility. My TV has USB ports and will play MP3s and a surprising array of video files directly off a jump drive. So what I’m really looking for is a way to view and control my office PC desktop from my living room. The TV has a web browser, the PS3 and TV both run Hulu/Netflix and, like I said, I can manually run movies and music off a jump drive. However, none of my devices will run PC games like WoW.

So, while I can do like 90% of the things I want, it would be nice to have them all be possible via one method instead of going to a separate device for each process. And, while it won’t kill me not to be able to play PC games on my TV, I’m just really surprised at the limited options for doing so. How is it that there’s not more demand for this kind of functionality? My 3 year old iPhone and my shitty HP tablet both have apps that let me remote desktop into my PC from anywhere in the fucking world. Why the hell can’t my TV do that?

Jack’s suggestions are much better than the video options I found before, but still leave me with the keyboard/mouse issue. One thing I thought about was getting a second computer to set next to the TV and VPN'ing into my office PC, but I’m a bit concerned about the video quality of that option. I would have to spend several hundred dollars on the secondary PC to make sure it had decent enough processor and video card to make full use of the HDTV. Or I could just forget connecting the two and get a second PC, load it up with my games and plug it directly into my TV. Both ideas would work, but I was hoping there would be a less expensive option.

It sounds like that might be the only way to go short of running wires though. Laying cord on the ground is not an option due to layout. It would have to go across too many high traffic areas (including the main stairway). The attic is pretty clean and accessible, so I guess wall wiring wouldn’t be too bad. Still a hell of a project though. Especially since I'd have to run HDMI and USB both in order to get keyboard/mouse. I guess I could use one of Jack's devices to wirelessly do video and just run USB.

I really thought that someone would make a system with a transmitter that plugs into my computer and a receiver with keyboard/mouse functionality that plugs into my TV. Am I the only person who’s ever looked at their TV and thought, “This is so much better than the monitor on my PC. How can I get my PC attached to this thing?”

Currently available TVs probably can stream off a desktop via ethernet. My two year old sony tv can play videos off my computer via a network connection. TV processing power is lagging behind other devices due to cost of other parts in the tv. Its just a matter of buying an expensive tv with a powerful enough cpu required to display that spongebob squarepants flash game your daughter will be playing in 1080p.

Hardwired connection to the pc for the video and then a usb dongle with an extension cord for the wireless keyboard and mouse.

Should cost you maybe MAYBE $60 total.
