Its a possibility, assuming one of the other employees quit, that I could get the hours Im looking for. In discussion with the manager there, he mentioned he may be allowed to hire an assistant manager as well and with my experience I would be first in line... But its hard to bank on possibilities...

Kind of a similar system here in Canada. Generally you don't qualify for unemployment if you are fired, but you are asked to give the details surrounding your termination and it is handled on a case by case basis. Interestingly enough, as I understand it, the former employer is almost never brought into the situation and the decision is left up to the agent assigned to your claim.
Unfortunately, "My boss is a cockmongler" generally isnt sufficient.
