What is that swirling vortex of power that is between the Eastern Kingdons and Kalimdor? It's called the Maelstrom...
The Maelstrom was created thousands of years ago after the end of the War of the Ancients with the destruction of the Well of Eternity. The explosion caused huge destruction of much of the land mass and reshaped the world as we know it today. Previously, there was only one giant continent, Kalimdor. This event is often referred to as The Great Sundering [of Azeroth] or The Cataclysm.
The Maelstrom marks the location of where the Well of Eternity used to be and is a reminder that peaceful times are lost.
Little is known about the state of the Maelstrom. Some think that it is a vortex slowing swallowing the remains of Azeroth. There is also the idea that the land mass was not destroyed, but pulled into an alternate dimension where some lost heroes and villians have remained.
Still no word on the Emerald Dream.
Diablo 3 and StarCraft 2 are looking good.
The next generation MMO from Blizzard will not be out any time soon (+many years to go).
I do not work for Blizzard.
